You can reset the name if you have ssh access.
Remove usb disc from unit
login to readynas via putty , user = root - your admin password
goto /etc/frontview/usb
edit the file "usb-map" using editor of choice remove/clear all entries
save file
plug usb disk back in and it should be back to usb_hdd_1

There isn't a UI option to clear the list of USB disks.

There should be, and I can't imagine it being that hard.

You can submit or post this idea here. Having this option would surely help a lot ReadyNAS users who use a lot or several external USB storages in their systems. Once posted, I will give it a kudos and I hope it will get more.
