Fails to Boot

I have a ReadyNAS NV+, v1, SN:21S195R300575, RAIDiator-4.1.10

When I press the power button, it flashes for a few seconds and then stops with the first and third drive lights solidly lit. This light pattern implies that a TFTP or USB OS image recovery is required. I downloaded and did an image copy of the the latest RAIDiator to the USB. When I try to get the NAS to access the Boot Menu (by holding down the Power button), it stops with the same pattern on the drive lights and never flashes the drive lights.

I also tried an OS Re-install, by pressing the Reset button while pressing the Power button. I released the Reset when all drive lights lit the first time and the NAS went to the same state – Power button light out and first and third drive lights lit.

I have reseated the memory module, retried the above and it made no difference.

Netgear Tech Support (Case # 20152626) requested that I try to put it in Tech Support mode but the NAS never goes into the state where the drive lights flash at 5 second intervals.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Yes, I followed the instructions that you referenced. I Used NTRawrite to make the USB image because I read that Rawrite32 would not work under Win7 64bit. The problem is that I never see the four disk lights flash, at five second intervals, as described in the Boot Menu.

Are you able to try another USB key?

Do you have a Mac/Linux machine? Another ReadyNAS?
  • Are you able to try another USB key? I will try this but I never see the Boot Menu, i.e. all four disk lights flashing at five second intervals.

Do you have a Mac (No) /Linux (I would have to convert a Windows machine) machine? Another ReadyNAS? Unfortunately, No

    Netgear Support suggested:
Please remove the disks from the NAS, make sure to label them of which bay they are inserted, they should be inserted back to their respected bays later.
Once disks are removed, try accessing the NAS boot menu, select Telnet mode, if it's successfull insert the disks back in, make sure to insert them to thier respective bays.
If it does not work, let us know so we'll process replacement for the chassis.

I tried this, but no success
  • mdgm,

Netgear Support has decided that this is a hardware failure and has agreed to "swap" the unit. I have asked about what is included in the swap and if there is anyway that I can keep the disk, insert them in the "new" unit and recover the data - my backups are a week older than the data on the disks. I know, I should go to a daily versus weekly backup schedule.

    Thanks for your help

It must be another Sparc ReadyNAS such as the Nv+ (v1). Migration instructions are in the FAQ.

If you have a spare disk (must not be from your array) insert that in the replacement NAS, update the firmware, verify the update was successful, then power down, remove the spare disk and then migrate your disks across as per the FAQ.
