File permission error (win XP)

Ready Nas Ultra 2

Single common share created, no access restrictions, ie for everyone to read/write to.

Mapped as a single drive letter in XP (re-connect at logon) and all the paths in MS Office etc now point to it for openning/saving files (new drive letter used as the files resided under another network drive previously with a different letter - new letter made copying them over easier).

On the common share, new files can be created, openned, edited, saved etc. no problem at all.

But, I copied all existing files from the other network drive to the NAS and...... open OK, can edit in MS Office, BUT, click on save (the modified version) and the error message "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error" comes up (that's the mesage in Word, slightly different message in Excel etc, but same result, no save).

If I do a "save as" and slightly alter the file name, all is well.

If I cancel the "save" the file is lost (apart from the *.tmp recovery file that MS creates).

Why ?????

The only possible clue is MS Word, when openning the file, opens its *.tmp (recovery file) with completely the wrong date. But dates and times on the NAS and PC are within a few minutes of each other. Not sure about the clock on the network drive the files originally resided on (now shutdown and disconnected) but is this relevant ???

I stress, all new files open/edit/save with no problem whatsoever, it's just our old ones (and there are lots.....) that don't.

Thanks.

  • Try these steps below:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Go to Advance Options tab
    4. Share folder owner: (type the share name)
    5. Share folder group: (nogroup)
    6. Put a check on "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings" and click Apply.

    P.S.
After you put a click on the Apply button the check will disappear inside the check box, it's normal because it's an action box.
  • To arjoseph,

    Many thanks, that works perfectly.....

I didn't see it anywhere in the manual but I'm up and running properly now.

    Thanks again.
