Just my 2 cents, but if drive 1 fails and you can boot and access everything with 2 thru 4 installed, then you simply hot plug the new drive 1 in and it is added and resync begins. Not sure I would boot with a new drive installed, and by "firmware reset" I really hope you meant OS Re-install and not the Factory Default function using the rear reset switch.
