according to other posts and research, i need to enable SSH root access to get the NAS operating as an SFTP server for this purpose... but NAS warns that SSH root access means no support (and presume risk I brick my nice black box), so not sure how to proceed... what risks am I running by enabling SSH? Do I open myself up to internet hackers or risk rodgering the box or what?

what risks am I running by enabling SSH? Do I open myself up to internet hackers or risk rodgering the box or what? The risk is that if Netgear decides you've damaged the OS with ssh, then they have the option to deny you support.
If you know what you are doing, it generally doesn't create issues. If you don't (or are careless), then you certainly can do damage.
If a hacker gained SSH access to the box, then they would have full control, and they could use that to springboard into other systems on your network. So you are depending a bit more on your edge router to provice security. You can of course disable SSH access when you are done.
