HELP!: backup failing on NV+ v1

I'm not using 1 TB drives. The larger cousins (ST2000M001 and ST3000M001) are on my avoid list. Though I am not seeing issues with the ST1000DM003 reported here.
I am buying WDC "Red" drives for replacements myself.
The NAS should have booted with a drive removed, I don't know why it didn't.
