HELP post power failure
After a power failure, the checking file system stopped at 2%. I did not notice this for a day or so. The power button would do nothing. RAIDRAR shows the unit as blue and I cant get to setup.
I turned off the powerstrip and turned the unit (NV+) back on and it said bad drive. I replaced the bad drive and repeated the process.
Now, drive 3 light is flashing (as expected?) on the front panel, but all lights green in raidrar
It turns on, goes to check FS again. I load up Raidrar and watch. At 44%-46% it disappears from RAIDRAR. I go to the unit and its stuck with a flashing LED power light at 46%.
I tried the process again, only this time at 44% when I checked the panel, it says Kernel Panic.
I tried putting the old drive back in... (drive 3 is flashing again, but solid in raidrar) and it starts the FS check again... at 33% again Kernel Panic
Should I try REST and then LOAD OS next or what?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you have a backup, then going to factory reset is reasonable. You could well end up there anyway.
You could try an OS reinstall first. It is a long shot, but on the other hand costs you nothing .
If you don't have a backup, try the boot option to skip the FS check. - guyworthyAspirantNo, I dont have a backup. I bought this NV+ because it was RAID 5 and would protect my data. Why bother with RAID if every failure is : factory reset?
I would like to attempt to save my data... Any other suggestions?StephenB wrote: If you have a backup, then going to factory reset is reasonable. You could well end up there anyway.

Well, as the manuals all clearly say, RAID is not sufficient to protect your data from loss. Many of us have learned that the hard way (in my case before I owned a NAS). Whether RAID protection is worth the storage cost is a relevant question, and there are scenarios where "no" is a reasonable answer. A UPS is (IMHO) always worth the cost.guyworthy wrote: No, I dont have a backup. I bought this NV+ because it was RAID 5 and would protect my data.

Data can be lost due to a number of events, including natural disaster (for example, fire or flood), theft, improper data deletion, and hard drive failure. By regularly backing up your data, you can recover your data if any of these situations occur.[/quote:3oralm6j]BTW, they missed some common cases, including power failure, chassis failure, software issues.
Anyway, the solution to every failure is not a factory reset, though fixing a kernel panic might require one.
As I suggested above, try using the front panel boot menu to skip the file system check. http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... _boot_menu If it works, make a backup! - guyworthyAspirantare you referring to this?
Button Time to Hold LED flashes Boot Menu Mode
Power 5 seconds 1 Skip Volume Check - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYes. This is also described in the hardware manual, sometimes the manual describes it a little better.
- guyworthyAspirantok, that got me as far as this:
3/19/2013 8:52:00 PM
after resyc message...
Front Panel shows
IP address (129.168.1.100)
space used/max 1.5G/2.7G
disk 3 light is blinking.
RAIDRAR shows yellow light, resync 0% complete... But never seems to proceed past 0%
Webportal for unit will load, but no functions work...
After about an hour, it drops out of RAIDRAR and the webportal wont come up either. (although front panel is still displaying as above)
It will eventually power down if I push the power button, after a 5 minute or so delay.
I did also get the following email:
Disk 3:
Previous count: 1010
Current count: 1042
ATA error count has increased in the last day.
Disk 4:
Previous count: 378
Current count: 779
(I had purchased a new HD to replace disk 3, which had 700 or so bad sectors over the last year, but never had disk 4 problems before.) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAll this stuff creates some risk to your data. Have you submitted a support request at support.netgear.com?
You could do a couple more things on your own, but the safest answer at this point is probably to wait for support. - guyworthyAspirantyes, but who knows how long before I hear anything...
- WokingWoundedAspirantI came upon this thread when searching for help after I too had an unexpected power interruption and "kernel panic" when rebooting my NV+. Nothing seemed to solve the problem (I didn't want to factory reset) and eventually as a last fling I disconnected my printer's USB connection to the NV+ and ....hey presto the NV+ booted up successfully. No I'm not reconnecting the printer; I shall find some other way to share it on the network!
Post dated addition 8 June. Well the above worked until a few days ago when the NAS failed again .....kernel panic etc etc.. So I logged a problem with Netgear tech support. I got a phone call from L2 support within a day.... tests, remote access to my desktop, more tests.... no joy so it was passed on to L3 tech support. I then had to reboot into the NV+ tech support mode and was called in due course by L3 support to say they had accessed the NV directly to discover one of the disks had failed. Remove the disk, reboot and hey presto all working fine. Don't understand why I didn't get the failure automatically advised through the NV+ log - would have saved all this trouble. I must say though that I was impressed by Tech support. Although the whole process took 2 or 3 days because of time differences, I was impressed to be called promptly and then on two subsequent occasions plus several emails. No fuss, sorted.
