I have the exact same issue with my RN102.
Any time I do a backup either timestamp over smb or even to locally attached drives eventually the NAS hangs as you've described. I have even noticed this behaviour when I copy large amounts of files to a usb hard drive using the web interface.
Interestingly Rsync backup to locally attached drives doesn't cause this issue (even when transferring large amounts).
I have found that if I let the backup job finish everything returns to normal and I don't have to restart the NAS. Hence it seems as though rather than fully freezing the NAS the backup jobs are just taking up too much system resources. Although I would have thought an Rsync job would have used more than a straight file copy!
I currently have a support ticket open and have provided them with my system logs (twice) however they have not been able to determine a cause.
