Help wanted in configuring E-Mail Alerts in Dashboard using NV+
Hi Guys, I have a topic open concerning recovery of Admin Password but ive resolved that and rather than add to it with this query I have opened a new topic as its kinda different. Hope this is the right protocol. Anyway.
So i want to change my password now i Have reinstalled the OS and updated the firmware but I am having some problems recieving E-mails ! I sent myself a test message first to confirm that my E-mails were working correctly and I got the Rest Email. Kinda !!!! Its bouncing back from the server with a Mail Delivery Error and turning up in my Yahoo inbox.
I think Im getting the content of the message including in the mailer error along with a brief explanation that messages from a stated ip address which i dont recognise will not be delivered due to being on the Spamhause project list of blocked ip's !
What I would like to do is set up the Alert configuration as I dont know what needs to be done here to have my emails delivered correctly. Do i need to specify the smtp for yahoo for instance or will setting it as internal do ? I find some of the settings in the alerts section confusing though I know what the smtp is and used to configure outlook express for people all day long ! That was years ago now and the finer points are lost in the mists of time.
Can you please advse whats neccessary for a yahoo mail address for correct configuration in the alerts drop down under System Configure Settings.
Thanks

You should definitely set up email alerts. They are very helpful if the NAS runs into problems (failing disks, etc).
Some users have had issues with password recovery though. Since the NAS password can be reset anyway with an OS reinstall, I suggest taping the admin password on the inside of the drive door. Though not normally recommended, it seems to me that if the NAS is stolen you'd need to assume the data was taken off the NAS anyway.

You need to use the yahoo smtp server.
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
- Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
- Port - 465 or 587
- Requires SSL - Yes
- Requires authentication - Yes
- Email address - Your full email address (name@domain.com)
- Password - Your account's password
You will also likely need to change a yahoo security setting:
- Go to your yahoo account secuirty settings
- Select Allow apps that use less secure sign in.
Some explanation on "less secure sign-in". The sign-in itself is secure. What makes it "less secure" is the NAS knows your yahoo password.

Hi Stephen, Thats great. Thanks. Quick question out of curiosity. Why does my nas need my e-mail password ? is that some anti spam thing ?

You are sending the email using your yahoo account, and Yahoo (like most mail providers) won't allow anonymous use of their smtp server. That does help reduce spam (and worse - fraudulent email).
There is a new concept (called an authorization protocol) where you authorize the sender w/o giving it the password (which is an authentication method, not an authorization method). That uses a protocol called OAUTH. With authorization, the sender uses an app-specific "access token" which is not the same as your yahoo password. The NAS doesn't support OAUTH though.
