HTTP permissions not working?

Hi all.

I just picked up a ReadyNAS 314 to replace the old ReadyNAS 1000s that has given us yeoman service for the last 7 years. We use it here at work, with a number of shares set up for individual departments. Each department has its own share, and that share is only accessible by a single group, comprised of the members of that department. Access can be via either SMB, AFP, or HTTP, depending on that department's needs.

I've upgraded the 314 to 6.0.4 for now, as the warnings about AFP shares permissions not being set correctly on newer versions worried me.

In testing the 314, I've come across an unusual problem. I've enabled HTTP access for each share, and set permissions so that the only entity that has any kind of access to it is the group set up for that share. However, when I connect to the 314 via a web browser and put in the URL for *any* share on the 314, I get a file list. No login prompt...I can view any share's file list at will.

Any ideas why this is happening? Also, please tell me that there's a proper user web interface under OS 6 (like there is with 4.x), and not just this general Apache file list. It would be EXCEPTIONALLY disappointing if there isn't.

Thanks,

Chris

  • To provide a little bit more information:

I cannot turn off HTTP or HTTPS in the Settings screen...clicking on the checkbox does nothing.

If I try to change the SSL Key Host IP address in the HTTPS screen, it just sits there and spins its wheels...nothing seems to happen.

Also, there's no power on/off icon in the top right corner of the browser window (where the Help and Logoff icons are), although the documentation says it should be there.

Any ideas? Anybody? I hate to think I just spent $600 or so of my department's money on a unit that's so buggy out of the box that I can't deploy it.

6.0.4 is pretty old, you should probably try 6.1.1
  • The power icon is on the system overview page adjacent to the diagram of the NAS.
The bugs are actually being eliminated surprisingly quickly with each new release.
  • I tried installing the 6.11 update. Unfortunately, nothing has changed....I still cannot turn off HTTP or HTTPS access, and viewing a share through a web browser only shows the very basic Apache file list (is this normal? Is the UI from 4.x gone now?). I can, however, change the IP address for the SSL key host.

I also did manage to find the power button, so that's an improvement. :)
  • So after going back and forth with Netgear tech support regarding this issue, this is what they told me this morning:

"Seems that this feature of the NAS is having issues. For now kindly use the "Browse" feature on the RAIDar. "

Lovely. I've asked for clarification as to whether this affects all 314s or not.

Does anybody out there have a 314 with the HTTP access working properly?
