Increase capacity of ReadyNas 214 with one HDD

1. Create or update your backup.
2. Power down the NAS and remove the 5 TB drive.
3. Insert the four 10 TB disks into the NAS, and do a factory default.
4. Reconfigure the NAS, install any apps
5. restore your data from backup.

Method 2:

1. Create or update your backup
2. Hot-insert the first 10 TB disk into slot 2
3. Wait for resync to complete (vol size will be 5 TB)
4. Hot-swap the 5 TB drive with the 2nd 10 TB drive and wait for resync to complete (vol size will be 10 TB)
5. Hot-insert the third 10 TB disk and wait for resync to complete (vol size will be 20 TB)
6. Hot-insert the fourth 10 TB disk and wait for resync to complete (vol size will be 30 TB)

Method 1 is faster, but your data will be off-line for a while.  Method 2 is much slower, but will the data will remain available.  The NAS won't be as fast during the resyncs though.

 

Don't neglect the backup step - the volume is unprotected during a resync, and if a disk fails you often will lose all your data.
