insane high Local Cycle Count after expansion
i have an RNDU6000. Recently i added a 6th disk to it. Western Digitaal 3TB Red. An offline expansion was need and successful in the end.
I bought the 3TB brand new and only runs now for 2 months or so.. This is the current SMART+
Raw Read Error Rate 0
Spin Up Time 5816
Start Stop Count 16
Reallocated Sector Count 0
Seek Error Rate 0
Power On Hours 1177
Spin Retry Count 0
Calibration Retry Count 0
Power Cycle Count 16
Power-Off Retract Count 8
Load Cycle Count 107006
Load Cycle Count seems insane high (Compared to the other drives). The Load Cycle Count is also getting higher during the day.
This is not normal right? What should i do? remove it and send it back to the vendor and ask for a new one? (i have a spare 3TB)
Thanks in advanced

- vandermerweMasterLoad cycle count problem is a known issue with newer Red drives.
There is a tool provided recently by WD to adjust the drive to reduce or eliminate the problem, there is a a link in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=74980
If you search the forums for "load cycle count" you will find a lot of information about the problem.
Personally I think the newer WD red drives are not suitable for Readynas users. The older red drives seem to have been set up more appropriately at the factory and many users are happy with them.
Seagate do a NAS drive that does not require user modification to make it work normally.
Wd deny that there is a problem with LCC causing damage.
I returned my 4 tb red drives to wd for a refund and bought seagate NAS drives. - AmienAspirantthis S*cks .. before i had 3 greens in it .. they had the same problem, but i could fix it with wdidle. because i wanted "compatible" harddisks, i bought 3 new RED's to replace with the greens.
It's really strange that only 1 RED has this issue. All 3 reds are 68EUZNO versions.. How can i see why the other ones don't have this issue? is there a production date somewhere? the one that is causing the issue, is bought from a different store. Might buy another one from the same store as i bought the 2 HD's which are not causing any issue.
What is advised to do? the one with the high local cycle is need to replace asap i think? This utility is not gonna fix the count. i can't return this HD right? you managed to return the HD to WD? cause the retail store won't help me with this i think.
Should i also run utility on the HD Red's without any problem? and what about support from netgear. I Guess that they still support it after using this utility? and where is the netgear communication about the issue? - vandermerweMasterYou can use the utility, I dont think wd will take your drives back now that there is a fix that they support - when I returned mine, there was no fix. You can try ofcourse.
Netgear must support if required as the disk you are using is on the HCL. - AmienAspiranti could use the utility .. but take time for me to do this. I don't have a windows PC or SATA extern harddisk. Perhaps i could use the Linux version to run the fix. Plus it take time to Resync again .. But then again .. even if the fix works .. i don't want a HD in there with that many cycles. So who is gonna replace my harddisk?
* retailed would say no
* western digital would refer to the fix
* netgear?
i still don't get it why the other two doesn't have this issue (while they are all 68EUZNO)
for now i replaced it with a green and resyncing now - AmienAspirantI filed a support ticket @ netgear
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you just purchased, you perhaps could simply exchange it from the seller (maybe for the equivalent Seagate).
Though personally I would not be concerned about a 100K cycle count, as long as it doesn't continue to climb. I have several WDC disks with cycle count around 1 M which are all working fine. So in my experience they exceed the spec on the data sheet by a considerable margin.
WDC green disks have the same issue, so keep an eye on the LCC count after resync. - AmienAspirantI will wait for reply from netgear, otherwise i will contact the retailer.
It's more the feeling that counts :) i know it might work, but i just like the have good SMART+ specs when i pay quite abit for this
WDC green disks don't have this issue anymore, if you use the WDIDLE tool. i had 4 greens in the RNDU6000 for about 1 year, all with a LCC of around 33 - vandermerweMasterWhen I said that Netgear must support, I meant they will offer you support for the NAS as you are using drives on HCL. If you use drives not on HCL they can deny support for the whole device.
Unless the NAS was purchased with those drives ( which it wasn't) Netgear won't have any responsibility to deal with the lcc affected drive.
Why are you contacting them?
But the way, western digital have their own compatibility list. Interestingly none of the new range of readynas units is on their list of compatibility with the red drives. I think your unit is actually on the list though. - AmienAspirantI know what you meant, i just want to hear the advice of netgear what do to, replace HD, apply this tool etc..
btw .. this WD tool and wdidle .. this is the same fix? - vandermerweMasterOk.
The tool has a different name, I've not used it so I don't know whether it is exactly the same, but I believe it allows you to adjust the idle setting as with the wdidle tool.
I suspect netgear will not advise you on this as it is a drive issue and they won't want to expose themselves to any liability if they give you advice; that is, if they say it's ok then you lose data because of a drive failure then.....
Personally I'm like you, I can't stand it if things aren't perfect when I buy them. Having to make an adjustment like this on a NAS specific drive is ridiculous.
