The tool has a different name, I've not used it so I don't know whether it is exactly the same, but I believe it allows you to adjust the idle setting as with the wdidle tool.
I suspect netgear will not advise you on this as it is a drive issue and they won't want to expose themselves to any liability if they give you advice; that is, if they say it's ok then you lose data because of a drive failure then.....
Personally I'm like you, I can't stand it if things aren't perfect when I buy them. Having to make an adjustment like this on a NAS specific drive is ridiculous.
