iTunes. NV+ V2 4bay's
Hi all.
I just got my first NAS.
I read on the Netgear website about the device before I both it and noted it had a iTunes Server
but I can't find how to turn the iTunes server on the NAS.
Dose the NAS have iTunes Server as it says on the Netgear website?
pls help me to turn on the iTunes server.

- AvorillAspirantSo you men I can't trust the information Netgear buts on netgear.com
If so maybe I should go for a different manufacturer - axg20202AspirantAfter waiting for ages for this feature to be added to my Duo V2, I activated the Firefly server myself using SSH. Its not hard to do. You need to install the SSH Access add-on, connect to the NAS with an SSH client such as PuTTY (free download; google it), edit the 'services' file at /etc/default/services (change the entry DAAP=0 to DAAP=1) to switch on the Firefly service, then edit the entry in the mt-daapd config file to point Firefly to the location of your music folder on your NAS and any other config tweaks you want to do. All this is done using Notepad and standard Linux shell commands via PuTTY (Google the commands for changing directory, listing the directory contents and copying a file from one folder to another - that's all you'll need. Using PuTTY, make a copy of these two files to the root of the NAS (/c), edit them using Notepad. Then use PuTTY again to copy the edited files back to their locations to overwrite the original (you want to keep backups of the unedited versions). Then just access the config web page for Firefly using http://your_ReadyNas_IP:3689
- AvorillAspirantDo you knop of à step by step guide to do tjis?
- axg20202AspirantIts not supported by Netgear as its not an official feature, so I doubt they will give you a step-by-step. I managed to work it out for myself, so I'm sure you could using the above. You can't do an harm using PuTTy to get used to browsing the file structure of the NAS. Once you work that out and how to copy a file from A to B, the rest is easy.
- axg20202AspirantOK, this is from memory so take it with a pinch - use at your own risk. I would get familiar with the cd (change directory) and ls (list files in the directory) before copying and replacing files using SSH. Don't blame me if you cock it up!
1) Install the SSH Access add-on and restart your NAS
2) Download the free PuTTY SSH client from t'internet and install it on your PC
3) Enter the IP address into PuTTY and click 'open' to start an SSH session with your NAS
4) Once successfully connected, logon with username: root and password: [your admin password for your ReadyNAS] - PuTTy should confirm the connection and bring you to a command prompt
The rest requires that you have admin access via Windows explorer so that you can browse the NAS file structure in Windows and edit files on the NAS.
5) In the PuTTY command window, you will use Linux shell commands to copy files, edit them on your PC, and then copy the edited versions back using PuTTY.
5a) In PuTTY, enter the command cp /c/etc/default/services /c/[nas folder of your choice e.g. /c/]
This copies the services file to another folder on the NAS so that you can edit it with Notepad in Windows, so choose a folder that exists and that you can access on your PC. cp /c/etc/default/services /c/ will copy the services file to the C/ root of the NAS.
5) Now open the copy of the services file with Notepad and find the entry DAAP=0. Change the 0 to 1 and save the file.
6) Back in PuTTY, enter the command cp /c/services c/etc/default/ This copies your edited version of the services file (at /c/) to replace the original.
You may need to restart the NAS after replacing the services file to get Firefly running.
In theory, you should now be able to do the rest of the configuration using the Firefly web admin page at http://your_ReadyNas_IP:3689
Here you can edit the location that Firefly will look for your music files.
Itunes picks up the share automatically.
If someone could confirm this that would be great as this is from memory.
Andy. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo, no, no. Don't use Notepad as that will corrupt the formatting of the file. Use Notepad++ if anything. You could just use the "vi" command to edit the file via the command line (could look up this command's MAN page for instructions on how to use it).
It is a good idea to make a backup of the file before editing it though.
It's possible you might need to edit the firefly config depending on what its contents are too. - axg20202AspirantNot true. My method works fine as I've just done it! As long as you don't delete the special character between each entry in the file it is fine.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt is safer to use Notepad++.
Easy enough to use "vi" to edit the file directly on the NAS (if you have SSH access enabled) - rsalkinderAspirantHi
I have bought the readynas duo v2 and was under the impression that that it did support the iTunes media server as the duo 1 did. I have since found out that it does not.
I am not exactly a techno fundi and was wondering if someone could post a step by step guide on how to activate it. (Guide for dummies please) including the firefly installation please.I have noticed that netgear doesn't offer any support if one activates the ssh service and am a little hesitant to do it without knowing exactly how. Can someone also confirm that this method of activating the iTunes server works.
Thanks!!!
Rael - chirpaLuminarymdgm, time for you to make an addon that does this :P
