I tried to follow the instructions on the link near the top of this thread and discovered 2 big issues.
If you upgrade 10.4 from a Leopard CD there are 2 additional steps you must do.
You must Install the Developer tools xTools from CD extras and you must download and
Install 3.0.3 rsync from the Apple site.
The -E function is not in the standard Leopard rsync
Once you do that it does work.
