Move HDDs from dead NV+ to another?

I'd install 4.1.15.

Yes. All the settings are kept on the disks themselves.

That will work, but if the firmware on the spare isn't 4.1.7 then 4.1.7 will be installed onto the disks.
So you might want to install a scratch disk on the spare first, and install the firmware you want there.

I don't know the fw version on the dead unit.
Should I do anything on the working unit before removing the disks and putting in the ones from the dead unit?
For example delete existing shares, resetting all settings...?
Are settings like IP address, defined shares etc. going to be inherited as disks are transferred?

I proceeded accordingly.
The device works fine, kept all settings. Also, firmware was carried with the disks, so it is 4.1.14 as it was on the dead unit.

Then the second system must have also been running 4.1.14 when it was shut down. Otherwise the OS on the flash would have been installed to the disks (either upgrading or downgrading).
