Users who previously had access to these folders could no longer access the foldersuntil we updated the permissions on the folders.
Did you delete any user accounts on the NAS? Or switch the NAS over from AD to local user accounts?

To clarify this - the share actually never had NTFS permissions, because it never used the NTFS file system. The file permissions you see on Windows are mapped from BTRFS via SAMBA. And the account owner/group information you see in the NAS admin UI are in fact linux user accounts on the NAS (or imported from AD if you use that).
What changed is that those accounts appear to have been removed from the NAS. As a result
- The NAS can only report the UID and GID for those owners and groups (since those are still in the file metadata, even though the accounts are gone).
- Any windows users who were using those credentials (for instance, stored in the Windows Credential Manager in their PCs) will end up with guest access because their username is no longer known to the NAS.
If you used the "home" share feature of the NAS you should check to see if the home shares are still there. Normally when accounts are deleted the home shares are deleted with them.
