New disk in NV+ v2 and 'Volume expansion failed'
Good evening,
I'd like to ask the members/experts about an expansion problem I'm having. I've done a search and suspect it's the usual 8TB volume expansion problem that seems to occur now and again... I got hold of an NV+ v2 in April 2014. It was factory reset, running 5.3.11 firmware, and installed with 2x 2TB disks (1.8TB usable iirc), X-RAID2. Some time later I added one 4TB (2-2-4) and it resynced and expanded fine (3.6TB usable iirc). I've just added another 4TB (2-2-4-4) and it seemed to resync okay but now I keep getting 'Volume expansion failed' on each restart, even though the volume capacity shows as 5.4TB and 'redundant' on the overview page.
Basic logs are below and more can be provided if you tell me which are needed.
So, do I need to factory reset and restore from backup, or is there something else at play here? Eventual plan is to have 4x4TB but that won't happen for a while yet due to cost of the disks. In the current state, am I really protected if a disk fails?
Any help would be appreciated please.
Regards,
Kris.

- NhellieVirtuosoYou can try first to reboot the device and see if the expansion will proceed. Other things you can check is if the drives are on the compatibility list http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20686/ and lastly check if all the drives are okay (use drive diagnostic tools from manufacturers like seatools for seagate and WD lifeguard for western digital)
- krisleeAspirantThanks for the suggestions. All drives are on the hcl and the unit has been restarted numerous times and each time it says volume expansion continuing, expansion failed and then system up.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou aren't at the 8 TB limit, since you started at 2 TB volume size and are headed for 8 TB. So the growth is only 6 TB.
You won't get to 4x4TB though, you will need to reset before then. So one option is to bite the bullet and do it now.
I think your volume is redundant though, just not at the capacity it should be at. Since you started with 2 TB, the expansion happens in 2 phases (2 TBs in each phase). The second phase failed for some reason. - krisleeAspirantThanks StephenB.
I guess it's disk checking time via manufacturers tools and then a reset :(
To check the drives, is it as simple as turn the NAS off, remove each disk, connect to a spare SATA port on a PC, run the test and replace in same bay on the NAS? This won't break the current volume when I restart the NAS? There are a few items I need to add to my backup before I can reset the NAS.
Cheers,

Yes. There are optional destructive tests, but there are clear warnings / confirmations so they are easily avoided.krislee wrote: To check the drives, is it as simple as turn the NAS off, remove each disk, connect to a spare SATA port on a PC, run the test and replace in same bay on the NAS? - krisleeAspirant
I thought I should provide an update on this.
In the end all disks checked out fine so there was no obvious reason for the expansion failure. I bought another 4TB disk and reset the NAS with 3x 4TB disks, which took a couple of attempts and a few days to complete. I then re-configured the NAS and copied all the data back from my backups, which took another three or four days...
Now all sorted with a 7.2TB usable space and room for one more disk in the future.
Thanks for the help,
Kris.

How do I cancel 8TB limit?
- BaGRoSAspirant
I have NAS because don't have any other space...
I found https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta-Release/4-2-16-T75-problem-s-ultra-6-w-six-3-TB-drives/m-p/799924#M470 offline resizing, but i can't install isof :/
