New disk in NV+ v2 and 'Volume expansion failed'

I guess it's disk checking time via manufacturers tools and then a reset :(
To check the drives, is it as simple as turn the NAS off, remove each disk, connect to a spare SATA port on a PC, run the test and replace in same bay on the NAS? This won't break the current volume when I restart the NAS? There are a few items I need to add to my backup before I can reset the NAS.
