Yes. There are optional destructive tests, but there are clear warnings / confirmations so they are easily avoided.

I thought I should provide an update on this.
In the end all disks checked out fine so there was no obvious reason for the expansion failure. I bought another 4TB disk and reset the NAS with 3x 4TB disks, which took a couple of attempts and a few days to complete. I then re-configured the NAS and copied all the data back from my backups, which took another three or four days...
Now all sorted with a 7.2TB usable space and room for one more disk in the future.
