No recognising replacement disks
Hi - I have a ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Edition which has 6 x 2Tb WD RP4 disks in. It is probably a good 7/8 years old.
We moved house recently and it took my a while to re-establish my tech environment. However when I restarted the NAS, it said Disk 4 and Disk 6 were dead so I bought two new ones - obviosuly the orginal RP4's were no longer available so I bought 2 WD Black Edition 2Tb disks - they are SATA III but I was reading this is OK but they will only perform to SATA II which is fine.
On replacing the "dead" disks, RAIDar doesn't see them and the Front End software is still showing the disks as being dead but also the same old RP4 disks. Its as if it hasn't gone through a routine to re-register what it in the chassis.
I have tried rebooting with volume checks and FW checks etc etc but no luck.
Any ideas.
Actually having ready through a number of threads it may be my original disks ae not dead but the system is playing up - I just don't know how to check whether it is or not.
Whilst it will be nice to recover the data that is on there it wont be the end of the world if I don't so my plan B is just to restart all over again - but I am not sure how to do that either :) So help with that process also appreciated.
But Plan A is definitely to try and see if I can recover the volumes on the NAS first. I just need it to know there are two new disks and go through a re-sync exercise..
Thanks
Steve

As an update - I just hot swapped out the disks and managed to get the NAS to acknowledge new disks - checked the logs. And there were messages on the front panel saying testing disk 6 etc - and I did notice a quick message saying Disk 6 passed !! However all that testing seems to have been completed but now RaidAr is showing disks 4 and 6 as not being present and the control panel still says the disks are dead but the disk ID is still the old disks I took out.

If you were using RAID-5 two disk failures would lead to data loss.
Have you hooked the "failed" disks up to your PC and tested them using vendor tools (e.g. SeaTools for SeaGate disks, or WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for WD disks).
Depending on whether the NAS has tried to add the replacement disks to the array or not (if it did then it may be too late to do anything) if it is the SATA backplane on the NAS that is having issues it may be possible (with some costs involved) for support to attempt data recovery using a new chassis (e.g. RN316/RN516) when booted into a special diagnostics mode.
If the disks really have failed then it could come down to whether a failed disk can be successfully cloned or not using a tool designed for cloning bad disks.
