No write access on backup-up of my shares

I have a Readynas NV+ which died suddenly, and probably permanently, this evening. May it rest in peace. The shares were configured with "share" security, which was fine when I bought and configured the box, but is no longer supported.

The data on this device was backed-up nightly to a newer Readynas Ultra 6 Pro. On this system, I used user-level security. I used rsync for the backups. The data in the backup shares seems intact, but when I mount the shares, I find that for anything other than the top level directory, I have only read access, I cannot write to folders on the shares. I can write to the top level directory. I have the shares configured on the readynas with default access "disabled" and I have the user account I use to mount the shares as "write" enabled. I do not need granular security; any client computer that knows the password for the user account should be able to read and write all directories and files.

HOw can I get write access to work? I am guessing this is a permissions issue. There's an option under share listing, "Advanced Options" tab to set ownership and permissions for existing files and folder in a share, and I'm guessing this will do the trick, but "i'd appreciate any advice.

Since I lost some of my redundancy with the failure of my NV+, I've connected a new external drive to my Ultra 6 Pro, formated it as ext4, and I'm backing up all the shares. Once this is complete, I'll try to get the permission issue solved.

    That's the option you need. Check it, then press apply. The checkbox will clear immediately, but the action can take some time to complete. There will be a pop-up in frontview, and a log entry when it is done.

    My share backups to my new external drive completed overnight, so I'll set the share permissions on the Readynas shares when I get home this evening.

    From your note, I gather I can just accept the Frontview default owner, group, etc, and simply click the check box, then Apply? (I don't have Frontview in front of me now, but as I recall there were a bunch of choices to be made regarding ownership, etc). Again, I don't need granular control over permissions - any user that has the password to mount the share should have full read, write etc access

    Right above the checkbox there are several settings that you enter:
    Share folder owner:
    Share folder group:
    Share folder owner rights:
    Share folder group rights:
    Share folder everyone rights:


    If you want to insist on a password set everyone rights to disabled.

    You can use the built-in admin account as the owner/group, or you can first create users/groups on the NAS.

    With Windows you can only access the NAS using one user/pass at a time - which can be a nuisance.
    -if box-access granularity will do, you can simply set up a single username/password.
    -If you need share-level granularity, the easiest way is to set up a group for each share, and user account for each user. Then if you want the user to have access to the share, simply add them to the relevant groups. Then they only have one password that gets them into everything they are entitled to access.
