With regards to (1), mainly because of what was said in the two threads I linked to, the forum members in those discussions both pointed to "Remote: Windows/Nas (Timestamp)" as a solution to the same issue, so I thought this sounded promising.
Ah, but this is excruciatingly embarrassing. I hadn't set the backup to run on Saturday night. The files have no appeared following Sunday night's backup. User error indeed. So, this is a non-issue now and I'm suitably reassured.
About 2 - yes, that sounds sensible, I shall do this. Thank you again, an apologies for wasting time.
