NV+ died, can I just install disks into a Pro 6?

Hi!

My old trusty NV+ didn't survive a recent move - it's as dead as a doornailed dodo, won't power up at all.

Since it's out of warranty, I'm thinking of replacing it with a ReadyNAS Pro 6, but the big issue is:

Assuming the disks are ok (for example if the the NV+'s problem is just a dead PSU or something), can I just buy a Pro 6, plug in the disks, and all my data will still be there?

If not, since the NV+ seems to be out of production, what other options do I have?

Thanks in advance,

Peran.

  • Hi!

    Thanks for your replies!

No, my NV+ doesn't even have a serial in hex (contains the chars "J" and "T"), and the label says "RND4410", which seems to indicate it's a v2.

I've found another retailer that sells v2's, so the fastest way to just get my backups on track again seems to be to just get another v2 (again, assuming the disks are unharmed).

If you know of any reason that might not be a good plan, please speak up. :D

  • be aware, that there are 2 types of duo/nv+ and you can not rely on just v1 or v2.

There are sparc cpu which are the original duo/nv/nv+ and have raidiator 4.x firmware.

There are new ARM cpu which are the current generation and use version 5.x firmware.

These differnt types are NOT compatibile with each others disks.

So if you are looking for a replacement device, you must ensure you get the same type of cpu if you want to reuse the same disks and lose any data.
  • Thanks, that's VERY good to know!

So, just to make sure, since my dead box used v4.x software, that means it's a SPARC CPU, and I need to make sure the new box uses v4.x too, or it'll be an ARM box, which will be... well, bad.

    Thanks!

  • Oh, and if I can get hold of a replacement PSU, is the part number I'm looking for: RND4PSU1-10000S ?

    Thanks!

When did you purchase your NV+ (v1)? Depending on when you purchased it, it may have a 5 year or a 3 year warranty.
  • Hi again!

Yeah, I'm aware it might still be under warranty, but that's an infinitely small issue compared to restoring the disks. I think I'll just go ahead and order a replacement PSU and hope that sorts me.

If it is under warranty, you would get a replacement unit, and you would simply install the old drives in the replacement.
