NV+ Failed replacing drives

Have a NV+ v1 with 2 500GB drives. Decided to replace with new, 1TB WD Red drives. Pulled drive2, replaced with new drive, waited until sync completed, rebooted, then replaced drive1. It never attempted to sync the new drive1 - just slow flash of drive1 led. After 20 minutes, rebooted. When I restarted, it gave a "Error: Bad Firmware" error and would not boot. Based on suggestions elsewhere in the forum, I tried testing memory (good), reloading OS, and finally did a factory reset. I removed drive2 (the one that successfully synced) prior to the reset. After the reset, it successfully booted and reported the full 1TB available (- overhead of course). I installed drive1 - thinking that it would recognize that it had data previously synced onto it. I now have a pair of empty, mirrored drives.

Is there a way to recover the data from the original 500GB drives and copy/restore that onto the new drives?

Thank you for your help.

Any hot-insert will wipe the drive, so if you don't want that to happen its vital that you power down the NAS before the insertion.

You can power down the NAS and try reinstalling your original 500GB drive 1 (with slot 2 empty), and then powering on. If I understand your sequence correctly that should boot. You can also try linux reader on a PC (http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/). Linux reader will only read your original drive 1, it will not read drive 2.

BTW, its a good idea to label the drives by slot.
