NV+ isn't showing external HD as backup option

I don't believe the NV+ v1 can read a 4 TB external hard drive - that requires support for GPT which is not present.
You can try creating 2 2TB partitions on the USB drive, and see if that works. A 4 TB FAT32 volume will not help (also FAT32 is limited to a max file size of 4 GB).
