I did the things you suggested but the problem persisted.
As a next step, I have created a new user and a new share and gave a completely new task of copying files in an open - public - folder (this was suggested by someone else)
This made no difference.
Then, I changed the default access on CIFS to r/w, ticked Advanced CIFS Permission; "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" and "Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this".
For new files and folders I gave everyone r/w rights.
In the Advanced tab, I gave both group and everyone r/w rights.
The went creative and gave user "Copy" the ownership of all the files thinking surely that will fix the "This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object" but it did not.
When I gave the ownership to the user "ro" who is the owner of files on the machine being backed up, it had told me that I cannot connect with the same credentials as different users.
And finally, when I started using different user (copy/admin/ro) to do the copying task in SmartSync software, it has repeated the above error messages about ownership and multiple logins with the same credentials.
I have now no idea what to do next.
In a meantime, I will re-load this latest faulty firmware and hope that either Netgear is going to fix (patch) it or someone has some new ideas...
