You aren't running Egnyte Storage Sync, so that is not relevant.
Sometimes there are constraints on how far you can downgrade. Your 2009 link was specific to 4.2.7 to 4.2.5 (and there was a later issue downgrading from 4.2.16 back to 4.2.15). But there's no problem going from 4.2.27 back to 4.2.24 (or 4.2.25). So you can downgrade, but you will be missing some important security fixes (shellshock in particular).
Not sure if this will help, but did you try setting up smartsync to run as a service?
