OS 6.2.2 Potential Improvement to Logs.
These comments refer to OS 6.2.2 "Admin Page" => "System" => "Logs"
1. We have "System: Automatic disk spin-down enabled." and "System: Automatic disk spin-down disabled." listed.
But NOT when the disks actually spin down or up, which is far more valuable, especially as the info above listed is what was supplied in "Power" => "Disk Spin Down" => Settings.
We cannot tell from these logs that when spin down is disabled and disks were already spun down, do they start up again, or stay down.
Suggest replace the 2 entries above with the ACTUAL disk spin-down/up messages (or add them and keep the above).
2. One could also argue that the 2 messages in 1 above would be far more suitable for listing under the category 'Disk' rather than 'System'.
Of interest, currently after a few weeks running the 'Disk' category is empty whereas the 'System' category has 206 entries.
3. We have "Miscellaneous: Snapshot 'c_1425340836' is successfully created ... " and "snapshot: Smart Snapshot successfully delete snapshot ... "
This is inconsistent and I would suggest that the 'Miscellaneous:' be replaced by 'Snapshot:' (probably with capital S on both for consistency).
Also add the 'Snapshot' to the pull down category filter.
4. Make the date and time the same string format throughout so that it is easier to read.
i.e. days of month less than 10 have leading Zero, and same for the hours.
5. Is there a list of what messages MIGHT appear and in what category?

- itsjasperLuminaryI notice that firmware upgrades also don't get logged on OS 6.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1. If you download the logs it will show in spindown.log. Also in RAIDar it will show whether the disks are "sleeping" or not.

They are logged in initrd.log - BaJohnVirtuoso

Whilst I agree with your comment, it still does NOT negate the need for improvement to the Logs as stated.
FWIW I never use RAIDar, as I prefere to type 'XNAS' in my browser, which is the name for my system and points to 192.168.1.4, as the ReadyNAS has a fixed IP address. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt would be nice to have some sort of stats on the % of spindown per drive. Maybe on the performance tab?
- dsm1212ApprenticeA filter search would be good on the logs window. So I could type UPS and find all the UPS log entries. As it stands now I can select warning and get a fairly short list which contains the UPS going on battery power, but to see the messages where it goes off battery power I need to include Info which means everything. My Info is mostly successful backup jobs so everything is lost in the noise from those.
Regarding date padding requested by the oringal poster: If they don't also switch to a fixed width font I don't think date padding will make much difference. I think a fixed width font for logs would be appropriate even though it's not as "pretty".
steve - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'd also like a filter on the log window.

Am I missing something ... I already have a filter on the log window, with categories:
ALL CATEGORIES, SYSTEM, DISK, VOLUME, SHARE, BACKUP, ACCOUNT and MISELLAENOUS.
I also suggested adding SNAPSHOT to the list as per my item 3. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I mean a text search filter. So I can look only at log entries that contain the word "spin" for instance. Or exclude any entries that contain the words "backup" or "snapshot".BaJohn wrote: StephenB wrote: I'd also like a filter on the log window.

Sorry ... got it ... I was being thick, just come back from meal in London (with wine).
However as per my original item:-5. Is there a list of what messages MIGHT appear and in what category?
If we knew ALL the messages and in which category they were listed, AND they were filtered using the existing category pull down, that would probably suffice.
It would also be very easy to do ... just improve existing, rather than generate a new 'string search' box.
I would NOT want the new facility to negate getting the existing facility to work much more efficiently with very little developer effort. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI would still like text filtering.
