Pro 6 power supply fan very noisy #19807401
Hello,
Just got back from a vacation, and I thought there was a water leak at home....except it was actually the ReadyNAS Pro 6 fans making a noise like water running down a pipe. I opened it up, cleared the dust out as usual which often quietens things down.... but this time the noise persisted.
Unplugging the two upper fans made little difference to the noise, blocking the power supply fan from spinning stopped the noise. So I suspect the power supply fan is on its way out, or in need of replacement at least...
Not sure of my options as reading other posts it seems that there have been mixed experiences in shipping the unit for repair, replacing parts oneself etc. I am happy to replace parts myself where possible but the power supply fan looks quite lodged in there - has anyone replaced one before?
What does the Jedi Council recommend on this - should I try to order the part myself and replace it? I have just submitted Netgear support case 19807401 if that helps. I would prefer not to have the NAS offline for more than a day ideally.
Thanks

- SeasportAspirantDid you ever get this sorted?
I had the same issue. PSU fan went very noisy. You could hear the NAS from a few rooms away!
Netgear only offer a complete replacement chassis which is a big big overkill - not even a replacement PSU!
However, I found it pretty straight forward to remove the PSU, take the cover off and get the fan out. You can do it without dismantling too much. I left all the PSU wires connected.
The PSU fan is an ADDA and is available from Mouser Electronics:
Model No: AD0812HB-A70GL-LF
Size: 80x25
Volts: 12
Power (W): 3.00
Speed RPM: 3000
CFM: 40.80
Noise: dbA 34.4
Ball bearing
I had to cut the old fan connector off and solder it on to the new fan wires. As long as you take care, it is pretty straight forward.
Now the NAS is as quiet as a mouse :-) - vandermerweMasterI also thought replacement of chassis was a bit much, however it is a very straightforward process, you will need to pay for an advance rma unit but then you'll need to pay for a new fan.
Warranty stays intact as well. - spaced_outAspirantThanks for the part details.
Actually it spontaneously resolved itself and never recurred - so no need to RMA.
