Problem with root FTP access

Question

Hi all,I've been trying to FTP into my ReadyNAS 312 as 'root' user. Access is denied. Tried using my admin password as well as the default ReadyNAS password.In the ReadyNAS Admin page, I"ve set the FTP settings to 'Enable FTP', 'Authentication mode: User' and left the other settings on default.I can FTP into it as 'admin' with admin's password no problem. It just won't let me in as root. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? Or is it just not possible to do what I'm trying to do?Thanks!Rob.

If you are trying to access the OS system files or the root home directory you should use SSH in conjunction with user root. FTP access per se can be limited to a portion of the data and in this case is limited to user files. If you must access system files using a FTP client then you have to use the SFTP network protocol (a SSH extension), if your client can handle it. For Windows WinSCP is a good choice. In this case the appropriate user is root. In any case, please be careful.Bye,Eskender

Hi Eskender,Your advice about using the SFTP protocol did the trick. I was already using WinSCP, so simply selecting SFTP instead of FTP from it's dropdown worked the magic.  =)As to why I wan't to do it, just this one task: put Private Internet Access config files into the /etc/openvpn directory. Using wget https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip from SSH resulted in a certificate error, so another user suggested I download the openvpn.zip file to my PC, then transfer it to the ReadyNAS by FTP. This will probably be the one and only time I will need to do this, so thanks for giving me the good advice  (and warning).Cheers!Rob.
