Ready Nas Duo failure

It could be either (or even both if there was a power surge), so it is hard to say. 

Try powering down the NAS, and removing both disks.  Label them by slot number as you remove them.  Then power it up again diskless, and see if the RAIDar still can't find the NAS.    

If RAIDar does find it, then power down again and try inserting disk 2 in slot 2.  Power up, and see if the NAS boots.  If it does, then immediately copy off your data.  If it still detects no disks, then power down and remove disk 2.

I think you kind of already know the best answer here.  Since you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, then using a data recovery company is probably your best option.  

If you have a friend who is more technical and has a Windows PC, then you could ask the friend if they are willing to help.  We can provide more information here if that would be useful to them.

If you are thinking a used NAS, then you'd have to be careful to get another v1 box. 

If you were to purchase a new ReadyNAS, then paid Netgear support could help you temporarily mount your disks - I don't believe this is free.  This support could lead to Netgear's data recovery service.  Note Netgear doesn't support any used NAS, so you'd have to purchase the NAS new from an authorized reseller.  One issue here is that there isn't much inventory out there, and prices for new ReadyNAS are very high.

Unfortunately, you've learned that RAID isn't enough to keep your data safe.   I hope you can recover it - if you do, then make sure you maintain backups of your data on more than one device.
