ReadyNAS - Transcoding and Non-Transcoding

I think a lot of confusion is caused by past mistakes (notably the v1 and v2 mess).
The new platforms are much simpler to sort through. RN100, RN200, RN300, RN500, RN700 are all desktop models, and large numbers are always more capable than the smaller numbers.
There are two comparison sheets (RN100, RN200; and also for RN300-RN700). It would be better if there was a single comparison sheet though, since the home/business distinction is somewhat artificial.
The 4 digit models aren't as clean, since there were existing model numbers in the way. I think I would have used a different framework for those (maybe 5 digits, or putting an R at the end of the 4 digits).

D, I think you have missed my point completely, I was using Plex as an illustration of what is wrong with Netgear's advertising and how it can be confusing to people who are new to NAS and what they can or cannot do.
S, I think you have hit the nail on the head because instead of being easier to understand the range of NASes on offer has become more confusing.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea how Netgear can clear up the confusion that a newby must feel when confronted by the models, options and diversity of NAS machines Netgear has on offer. And as someone that has been through it, cursory research cannot penetrate this fog of confusion either.

You know, as I was writing my previous post it occured to me that Netgear is a company set up to serve business requirements rather than home users. And as such, will tend to run into difficulties when trying to explain to home users NAS usage.
I believe that any business, whether large or small, can invest time, effort and money in going through the various options on offer so that it fits in exactly with their requirements. However, home users do not have the time or inclination to go through such research, unless they're enthusiast, and are more likely to pick something because they like the look of it.
That's why some users are angry when they find out their NAS cannot transcode or have the power to do what they believe they want, but could not articulate it at the time of purchase (or even believe they were mislead).
As you hinted at, there may be a solution somewhere providing someone at Netgear is willing to take a look at it.
