ReadyNAS 102 upgrade to 6.4.0
Yesterday I foolishly updated my firmware from 6.2.5 to 6.4.0 on my 102 unit. Since then all backups have failed. I have a weekly backup carried out on a Saturday night, failed. I have a ...

Actually if you look further up this page you'll see someone who says that since he's installed T21 his NAS has gone slow. That is something I can do without, so no, I'm not touching anything.
Thinking about using my old Vers 1 Readynas which does a backup every Saturday night BUT it failed last Saturday and so is now some ten days out of date. I would have to manually go through my files and transfer over the later versions to the old Readynas. Bad enough having to do this as a result of a fault, really annoying when it's incompetence...
Been looking around at other solutions and think I'll move to a WD NAS if there's no solution soon.
Bye, bye Netgear, I'd like to say it's been fun but it hasn't...

Hello,
I have some questions to somebody from NetGear or to some body who know it.
Like I wrote, NAS 102 is runig very slow after upgrade to 6.4.1-T21 and 6.4.1-T29 beta 2 (It is interesting to see that when I am connecting to NAS102 like admin through internet explorer NAS 102 runing ok) . I had not this problem with 6.4.0. My question is. Can I return back to 6.4.0? Do you think it can solve my problem with slow speed NAS102-PC PC-NAS102 (network is ok I checked it). If I will do OS reinstall what firmware will be in my NAS102?
May be this questions are stupid, but sorry i am not IT specialist.

Again careful here.
When I had problems I was once directed to beta firmware. Being cautious and like you not an IT expert I asked if I could reinstall the original firmware if the beta didn't work. I was told yes I could and still have this record from my online chat. However when I reinstalled the old firmware I wrecked my 102 and had to perform a factory reset losing all my stored data. In ordinary circumstances that would have been bad enough but the problems I had with my original firmware had been causing problems with my backups. Therefore I had to carefully restore my data using numerous older backups which fortunately I had kept and ultimately managed to restore my 102 to working condition. It took many weeks to carefully sort and check my data before I was confident that I had everything correct. Fortunately when the backup problem first occurred I started to make manual backups of current projects else these would have been lost.
I have always been paranoid about backups which has saved me.
Just got this from Netgear.
"Thank you for your response
I would like to inform you that I understand where you coming from, I know that you have a hesitation in updating the Beta firmware. However to fix the issue that your having with this is the update form our engineering team for now as they diligently working on the next available firmware.
You can always give us feed back once the BETA firmware will not work on your issue, For us to look for a work around on that. "The last sentence doesn't give me much confidence if I read it right.....that I can give them feed back if the beta doesn't work so they can look for a word around.....oh right, so I'm a test pilot again am I?
I know it's coming up to Christmas but do they think I fell of the Christmas Tree?

You can downgrade from 6.4.1 beta back to 6.4.0 if you wish. Just download 6.4.0 from netgear.com, and then use the manual install in services.
I don't know if it will solve your problem though. What transfer speeds are you seeing?

I am in good situation, if is possible to call this good situation :) . I made backup before 6.4.0 upgrade. I had very bad experience with my stored data many years ago and I learned how important is to make backup. I am "only" looking for how to back my NAS 102 to something like normal work.
transfer speed
I don´t know what is my transfer speed now, because i don´t know how to measure it. Sorry. I can only tell that when i want to go into some folder on NAS 102 I have to wait very long time (my PC is on small network with 1Gbit router) or my conection to NAS102 is freezed (no responze from NAS102, is not possible to conet to NAS102 like admin etc.).
To be or not to be that is not question now, but to go back to 6.4.0 or not to go back to 6.4.0 that is the question :)

You can copy a large file in both directions, and use a watch :smileysurprised:
But if you have a windows PC you can download NASTester and use that http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance
Do you normally use SMB/CIFS or are you using something else?

Wednesday 6.40am
Just got this from Netgear.
I understand that your hesitant to use the beta firmware. However the firmware was created by our engineering to address the issues from the firmware 6.4.0. I do suggest to check this link: ******removed******** You can also wait for the next firmware release but we cannot provide ETA.
So just sent this to Netgear.
Sorry but its like this.
I have a perfectly good car (netgear 102) which is working just fine, I get a call from my garage (netgear) asking me if I would like to take it in and have the latest wheel nuts (firmware) fitted.
I take the car in have the new wheel nuts (firmware) fitted drive it out of the garage and one of the wheels comes loose.
'Oh dear what a shame, that shouldn't have happened' says the garage (netgear). 'Please be patient and bear with us........'
The garage (netgear) calls me, 'we have a temporary fix (beta firmware), it should work, come in let us change the wheel nuts (firmware) again, if another wheel comes loose let us know and we'll have to look at it again.
Actually all I want is the original wheel nuts fitted which were just fine. Do you people not understand?

YorkBoy - did you see ifixdevice's post here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/rn104-updated-to-6-4-0-and-possible-solution-to-random-lock-ups/td-p/993214

I have come up with a better and more reliable solution. I have bought a WD NAS...

Everyone.
Just got this email from Netgear.
Dear ReadyNAS® Customer,
We want to thank you for being a loyal customer and would like to notify you of a firmware update, V4.2.28, for your ReadyNAS. You can download it here.
The V4.2.28 firmware will be the last software release on all the select ReadyNAS products listed on the web page below, including yours, due to its end-of-life status.
http://www.netgear.com/landing/eol.aspx
Interesting, they declare my 102 at end of life even though it's still in the warranty period. Great, thanks a bunch Netgear.
I will attempt a firmware update but only after others have tried it first and only after my new NAS devices have arrived in order to secure my data.
Cheers all, good luck.
- YorkBoyNov 12, 2015Luminary
Whoops.
My fault entirely, misread this email.
This is for my earlier V1 Readynas.
What a coincidence this should arrive now.
Anyway, the old V1 is working a treat and has saved me twice so far when the new 102 has failed miserably.
I shall not update that firmware, leave well alone.
Cheers all.

I switched off antivirus in NAS102 and NAS 102 is runing with much higher speed. It look like NAS antivirus did this problem.
- YorkBoyNov 29, 2015Luminary
Further to my email above.
Just got this from Netgear.
Dear ReadyNAS® Customer,
We’d like to inform you that the firmware upgrade alert sent earlier this week was sent by mistake. The ReadyNAS OS 4.2.28 update is not applicable to your ReadyNAS Duo (RND2000) or ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000).
We apologize for the inconvenience or any confusion this may have caused.
Thank you for being a valued customer, The ReadyNAS Team
So I wonder, had I been stupid enough to have installed this on my ReadyNas V1 would I have wrecked that too? That would have been so good after wrecking my 102 with 6.4.0
Netgear get your act together, if I'm a valued customer, then give me a little more quality.
- StephenBNov 29, 2015Guru - Experienced User
As you likely know, that original email generated a lot of questions from v1 owners here. The redaction was probably an attempt to resolve those questions more broadly to customers who don't participate here.
FWIW, The v1 NAS have been end-of-life for some years (though apparently many owners were not aware of that).
YorkBoy wrote:

It would not have installed - the NAS checks the firmware update for compability, and that test would have failed.
