ReadyNAS 104 ERR: Could not mount boot flash #24308679

Hello,
My RN104 does not start. It shows in the LCD screen "ERR: Could not mount boot flash" and the power button blinks. It does not respond to the power button and I've removed the HDDs after pluging it off. The RAIDAR utility shows a static blue dot at the left and TFTP_REQ in the info column. I had configured a static IP address but it is using another one, the web interface does not work at none of these addresses (either the static or the one shown in the RAIDAR utility)

I've done a memory test using the back reset button and it was suscessful (although painfully slow).

I've tried to reinstall the OS from an USB flash drive but I must be doing something wrong because it does not do anything. The procedure that I've followed is the following, first I've downloaded the image and uncompressed it, after that I've run the following command in the linux terminal:
sudo dd if="ReadyNASOS-6.2.0-arm.img" of=/dev/sdc1

(/dev/sdc1 is the usb flash drive address)
with the following output:
99772+0 registros leídos
99772+0 registros escritos
51083264 bytes (51 MB) copiados, 0,0825093 s, 619 MB/s

After that I've plugged the usb first in the front USB and in the second attemp in one at the back, disconected it from the power supply and reconnected it (with the USB), obtaining the same message.

Any suggestion would be appreciated, I've searched this error code but I've not seen much information about it.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi mdgm,

I'm also having a problem with the RN104 and need firmware reinstall via USB. Could you send me the instructions please?

    many thanks in advance!
  • Hi mdgm: Could I get a PM with the procedure to recover via USB. I'm getting the exact same symptoms after webinterface FW update to 6.2.2 from 6.1.9.

RN104 would boot to ERR: Could not mount boot flash. Already tried the following:
    1. removing all drives and starting fresh with a new drive to same issue.
    2. options via boot mode selection of reset default and reinstall OS same issue
    3. Tried No drives but still says ERR: Could not mount boot flash.
    4. Raidar status of TFTP_REQ

    Thanks
  • Hi

I am also facing the fact of a RN104 with the Could not mount boot flash Error.

I have worked through the list with suggestions and am seeing the same error over and over.
Last I checked with an empty disk to do a factory default and a OS reinstall.
    Still no luck,.

My forum searches seem to indicate I need to do a USB rescue action.

Can anyone supply me with the proper files and procedures?
The exact model number is RN10400 and has firmware is 6.1.9. installed, quite possibly corrupt.

Suggestions as to what may have caused it are welcome so I can prevent it from happening again.

    Thanks so far.
  • Hi

mdgm provided a solution for me. The NAS is buzzing again..

If you are the original purchaser (and still have warranty left) then contact support.  If the flash has failed, then you should get an RMA replacement.  The hardware warranty is 3 years.

  • Hi, I have same problem at work with RN10400  :(

I've ecountered many OOM errors after upgrading to 6.4.x and decided to back to 6.2.5 which have worked without any problems since september 2015.

I've used method described on this forum (go to 6.4.0 beta and then to 6.2.4). Unfortunatelly after installing i'm seeing "ERR: Could not mount boot flash" on LCD :-(

I've also tried usb recovery method using recovery tool without any effect (i used many pendrive's without luck).

RAIDar shows TFTP_REQ status so I've tried to use TFTP_Boot package (without success). I'm doing everything like in manual (setting exact ip for pc but netgear doesn't connect to tftp server) :-(

What am I doing wrong? Wrong tftp package?

It's sad that support offers help only after extra 75EURO payment for one time service, in case where netgear's firmware update (to 6.4.x) cause problems.

Going back to 6.2.4 is not recommended and if you run into problems with an unsupported downgrade and you're out of support warranty you can expect support to charge for assisting with that.

With those OOM errors you should have tried booting to volume read-only mode, backed up your data, verified your backup is good and if all your data was backed up proceeded to do a factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything and restore your data from backup).

If you see TFTP_REQ then USB Boot Recovery is typically recommended.

Your system currently can't find the boot flash though. I will PM you a suggestion that you could try.

        Hi mdgm,

Looks to be a common issue for alot of us, as i too now have the "ERR: Could not mount boot flash" on my LCD.

I too have tried USB recovery, OS Reinstall and factory reset to no avail.

I will admit i too have tried to downgrade from 6.4 to 6.2.4 where i encountered the error.

I was running 6.4.2 downgraded to 6.4.0 beta successfully and when trying to downgrade to 6.2.4 this is where the issue occured.

This is a brand new unit, purchased last week for a customer, so i need to get this back an operational again so i can install it into customers office.

I have another customer that was having performance issues since an upgrade was done last week to 6.4.2. I completed a factory reset and performance fixed itself for approx 24 hours. And now is experiancing performance issues again. I would like to downgrade the firmware but not if this is going to occur on the customers as well.

Please can you help me mdgm?

      Hello mdgm

I have the same problem as the people above "ERR: Could not mount boot flash".

I have installed Java 6.45 and RAIDar and get the following message.

      "RAIDar shows TFTP_REQ status"

I have used PUTTY to telenet into the box and have the # prompt, I have also navigated some of the system and used rnutil to make some basic investigations of the problem.

USB recovery doesn't work, I have tried a number of USB sticks and they all hang the box.

"Factory Defaults" doesn't work, likewise "OS install".

The only sign of life I get from this thing that it is not bricked completely is the "Tech Debug" option.

Any help in fixing this problem would be gratefully received.

      Best Regards

      Danny
