ReadyNAS 104 ERR: Could not mount boot flash #24308679
Hello,
My RN104 does not start. It shows in the LCD screen "ERR: Could not mount boot flash" and the power button blinks. It does not respond to the power button and I've removed the HDDs after pluging it off. The RAIDAR utility shows a static blue dot at the left and TFTP_REQ in the info column. I had configured a static IP address but it is using another one, the web interface does not work at none of these addresses (either the static or the one shown in the RAIDAR utility)
I've done a memory test using the back reset button and it was suscessful (although painfully slow).
I've tried to reinstall the OS from an USB flash drive but I must be doing something wrong because it does not do anything. The procedure that I've followed is the following, first I've downloaded the image and uncompressed it, after that I've run the following command in the linux terminal:
(/dev/sdc1 is the usb flash drive address)
with the following output:
After that I've plugged the usb first in the front USB and in the second attemp in one at the back, disconected it from the power supply and reconnected it (with the USB), obtaining the same message.
Any suggestion would be appreciated, I've searched this error code but I've not seen much information about it.
Thanks in advance

- vandermerweMasterWhat happened that caused this problem?
You have tried to factory default the unit with a spare disk in? I suspect this will not help.
Where did you get information on manually reinstalling the firmware using ssh?
I think you need to probably do a USB boot recovery or have someone remotely fix this.
The former is a last resort procedure, so I would wait for someone to help you with this.
Depending on the origin of this problem, support may be able to help you, although you have been doing significant things with ssh so they may deny support. - servandoAspirantHello,
I've never entered with ssh in the device and it just stopped working, I did not update it neither change the configuration before the error. I power it off (always pressing several times the power button) sometimes when I go to bed and yesterday when I tried to start it I found out that it does not work. I'm a little bit puzzled.
The code that I've shown corresponds to the commands that I've used to create the usb for boot, in my computer. I've tried to follow this link:
http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_can_i_perform_a_boot_recovery_using_a_usb_flash_device
However, I must be doing something wrong. I think that the command that I've used to create the image is correct so maybe I'm not starting correctly the NAS to boot by the USB.
I've not tried the factory default option, but I don't know if it is going to help as the unit does not boot and returns the same error without disks.
In addition, I've the device protected by an APC UPS, I think that electrical problems can be discarded.
Thanks - vandermerweMasterOk.
Those instructions are for old sparc based readynas devices. Did you read the qualifying statement / warning at the bottom of that page?
Do you have a backup of the data on the nas?
Don't' keep trying what you are doing, you'll probably make things worse.
The only thing you could try is removing the disks( with power off) , putting in one spare disk, then factory defaulting the nas. If you still get the error, the it's probably the flash that is the problem.
I don't know the procedure for USB boot recovery for the newer readynas devices and I won't be able to remotely fix this.
There may be someone on the forums who can help you and as I said, if not, you will need to contact support. You may need to pay them. - servandoAspirantHello,
I've tried to boot in Normal, Factory default, and OS Re-install modes with a spare disk and getting the same error in the LCD (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20898/~/readynas--accessing-the-boot-menu). The Memory test mode does work.
Regarding the boot from the USB, at least I've downloaded the image for ARM, but I don't know how I missed the Sparc part, it is clearly visible. Fortunately, it didn't seem to do anything.
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you boot in tech support mode do you see a 5-digit number on the front of the NAS and in the Info (far right) column in RAIDar?
- servandoAspirantNo, I've just tried it and it shows the same message. Also in the RAIDar, it shows the TFTP_REQ in the info column.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell you could try a USB Boot Recovery. Note that not all USB keys work. If USB Boot Recovery doesn't fix it then an RMA would be needed.
- servandoAspirantHow do I do the USB boot recovery?
Is it enough with pluging in the USB key with the image "ReadyNASOS-6.2.0-arm.img" (not just copy the file but using the dd command) and start the NAS?
Do I have to press the reset button and enter in a special mode?
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe procedure is different. I will send you a PM.

Would it be possible for you to send me the same info, as I am having exactly the same problem (with the RN104).
Thanks so much.
