In DLNA, the server extracts the audio/video from the file and streams the audio/video directly to the player. So if a file format isn't supported, it is always a limitation of the server, and not the player.

The situation with audio/video codecs is more complicated. The player is responsible for rendering, so it cannot play streams that use codecs it doesn't support. However, if the server supports transcoding, it can overcome codec limitations in the player.
Also, for some formats (DVD ISOs for instance), the DLNA framework will limit features (e.g., DVD menu navigation).
