ReadyNAS Duo v2 Backup to USB Question

Hi,

I have a client who requires an offsite back up of everything stored on their NAS (RND2000 ReadyNAS Duo v2). I imagined I could get two external USB hard disk drives and rotate them each day and plug them into the front USB port on the NAS but I have read of a lot of people having trouble doing this. It needs to be really simple for the client too.

I would have imagined it could be done by setting the back up destination to Front-Port USB and it could back up to which ever drive was plugged into it. Has anyone had success using this method?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

  • That's exactly how I've been doing it with a few clients. Sometimes it has been slightly iffy to get it working, but after formatting the disks and recreating the backup job it's been successful. Now I'm just stumped with iSCSI backup & restore via this method, but that's another issue. :)
  • Thanks somicoy. I was a little concerned that it wouldn't work. Do you use NTFS or EXT3 formatted disks?
  • I've gone for NTFS as it's easily accessible from a workstation in case it's needed. Don't have any study/experience data on the real differences, though. Personally I haven't had a problem.
