ReadyNas NV Pre Netgear No Boot
This device has worked fine for years.
This morning I realized it wouldn't let me access the drives.
I hard power cycled the device.
The device appears to boot but the blue LED pulses (not fast blink) continually.
I know a good bit about Linux and recalled that I had SSH enabled.
It lets me SSH in.
Here's some log files.
Last few lines of frontview/error.log
Here's raidlog from 2 days ago
partitions
Someone -please- help me with this, our business data is on this device and we don't know what to do!!!!
Thanks,
Matt

Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.
Thanks,
Matt - MWestfallAspirantTop is showing fsck.ext2 running, but we let it run several hours earlier and the light finally turned solid blue but nothing worked.
Will update thread in the morning whether or not things are working.
If anything happens to jump out at anyone from those logs please let me know.
The hard lock/non responsiveness the system initially experienced naturally has us concerned.
Thanks,
Matt - MWestfallAspirantOK so update, the fsck finished running,
But the blue power/led is still flashing.
I can't SSH either
Every 2.5 seconds there will be a brief 'pause' in the pulsing of the power led and the ACT led will flash.
All 4 disk LEDs are still green.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Matt - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI'm assuming from what you wrote above that you don't have an up to date backup?
Could you power down the NAS, remove the disks, connect them to an internal SATA port in your PC and check them using WD LifeGuard Diagnostics? - MWestfallAspiranthey mdgm, the point of raid is kind of to not need to backup, but yes we do have a recent backup.
the smart data is 100% clean on the disk, not a single write error on any of them.
and the fact that the fsck sees the folume and runs against it shows that the volume itself seems to be ok.
its like the nas is just freezing up or something :(
does anyone see anything specific in the logs above? or require additional logs? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired
MWestfall wrote: hey mdgm, the point of raid is kind of to not need to backup
The point of RAID is to provide redundancy/high-availability. If a single disk fails, data remains intact. This doesn't negate the need for a backup at all as there are a number of problems that RAID can't protect you against. See Preventing Catastrophic Data LossMWestfall wrote:

So? Testing the disks using WD LifeGuard diagnostics is more thorough. You could still have a bad disk.
You may also wish to run the memory test: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good - MWestfallAspirantYes but if it was -A- bad disk it would still boot and work and I could drop in a new disk :-/
- MWestfallAspirantI have a server here that supports RAID 5, but I know that different RAID controllers have different "raid headers" and if I plug them into it it could corrupt the data alltogether. Does that sound right or are RAID headers standardized for the purposes of data recovery events such as these?
Also, we do the backup weekly, and the device -quit- in the middle of the backup on sunday, so We've lost a weeks worth of work if I can't recover the volume or get the NAS back online :( - Bren_DerlinAspirantI would try an OS Reinstall at this point. This will leave the data intact and reset the admin password and network settings.
Follow the instructions in the guide
http://www.readynas.com/download/docume ... 0Nov11.pdf - MWestfallAspirantThat manual is not for my hardware, I do not have an NV+ or a Duo.
I have an Infrant ReadyNas NV.
