ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000 connection issues -- Wired XP fine, WIn 7 & WIn 10 wireless no go
Firmware 3.0.0, Sparc This 1st gen NAS has worked reliably for years. I've not taken steps to update firmware. I've also reset the system by reloading firmware from ROM, so I'm still at Firmware version 3.0.0. The last reset was occasioned by sluggish performance and intermittent connection to my Win 7 laptop, connected by wireless. Also, pinging the unit at 196.128.0.8 redirected to 196.128.0.7. A reboot didn't change behavior, nor reboot of router and switch. The reset did resolve the ping issue, and restored some access to the Win 7 system. I also deleted log files through RAIDar with the thought that a disk overflow might have affected some modules. In particular, inserting a USB drive made some temporary connection possible. On the other hand, the Win XP system connected via Ethernet works fine. RAIDar performs well on this system (no concerning status messages), and file access is as sure and quick as always. The new Win 10 laptop on wireless picked the NAS up. While showing the top level and lower level directory structure, attempting to access files takes an interminable amount of time and then ends with a file read error. I've been reviewing posts in the forum, but, it's not clear just what would help resolve. Options: Upgrade Firmware to most recent version from 3.0.0 -- and what is the best way to do this? Netgear, 3rd party providers? What is the advised process for doing so? Delete the Shares and rebuild from backup. Other? Many thanks for your thoughts.
Not clear if the issue is in clients & OS, Network, NAS, NAS version.
That is extremely old firmware (well over 10 years old). You definitely should update the firmware.
Is your backup to date? If not, I would do that first.
Then I would update the firmware. Perhaps first to RAIDiator 3.01c1-p6 (not sure if that's necessary). There is an option in the web admin interface to select a local firmware image to upload.then to RAIDiator 4 firmware. The latest firmware is 4.1.16. See the RAIDiator 4.1.16 Release Notes
If you can't update the firmware try a different web browser or an older version of it.
Once you've verified it's up and running on the new firmware I'd do a factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore your data from backup. This will mean that you can expand your volume later to use 2TB disks (i.e. up to 4x 2TB disks).
RAIDiator 3 was limited to a 2TB volume capacity, if I recall correctly.
There have been numerous other changes including updates to the samba package used by the NAS for SMB server/client.
Microsoft has disabled SMB1/CIFS via a Windows 10 update, so you'd need to manually re-enable that on your PC to fix compatibility.

Thank you for your analysis and response. At some point I'll need to upgrade, but for the time being, it has been working well.
All the best,
