It looks like there is file system corruption - which means that data recovery is likely needed.
This isn't something I've needed with my own NAS. However
- Netgear offers a data recovery service: https://kb.netgear.com/69/ReadyNAS-Data-Recovery-Diagnostics-Scope-of-Service
- Many users have had success with ReclaiMe software.
- Seagate offers a RAID array recovery service (any vendor's disks), but I've never seen any posts here from someone who's used it.
It is possible to mount NV+ volumes in x86 linux systems (connecting at least three of the four disks). But anything you do on your own risks making the recovery more difficult (or impossible).

I have been reading many of the threads on this topic. One thing that I have not tried is the factory reset, largely because I fear that the disks will be erased and the data lost for sure. I read that upon reset, there is a 10-minute window during which the process of erasure can be halted. I worry, however, that there will be some delay during reboot and after I wear out and walk away, I will miss the 10-minute window. Any thoughts on a reset?
I am prepared to try recovery software. I was warned, however, that such a process is potentially destructive. Is this true? Wouldn't recovery software be a "read-only" sort of activity?

Factory Reset will wipe all your data, the ten minute pause is just a period to cancel it proceding, nothing more

Actually the purpose of the pause is to give you a chance to change the default RAID mode from XRAID to FlexRAID via RAIDar. Current NAS don't need that, but OS 4 and OS 5 systems do.
But there is no option to preserve data, so don't use the factory reset boot menu choice unless you are prepared to lose it.

Analyzing the file system is read-only. Often recovery of the data includes repairing the file system, and that of course is potentially destructive. To clarify - the damage would have already been done, and the recovery attempt simply would have failed to undo that damage.
One way to mitigate that risk is to clone your disks. So if you have 4 disks available, you could do that. Look for a utility that does a sector by sector copy (many do). You can't use a mode that is file-system aware.
