I have been reading many of the threads on this topic. One thing that I have not tried is the factory reset, largely because I fear that the disks will be erased and the data lost for sure. I read that upon reset, there is a 10-minute window during which the process of erasure can be halted. I worry, however, that there will be some delay during reboot and after I wear out and walk away, I will miss the 10-minute window. Any thoughts on a reset?
I am prepared to try recovery software. I was warned, however, that such a process is potentially destructive. Is this true? Wouldn't recovery software be a "read-only" sort of activity?

Factory Reset will wipe all your data, the ten minute pause is just a period to cancel it proceding, nothing more

Actually the purpose of the pause is to give you a chance to change the default RAID mode from XRAID to FlexRAID via RAIDar. Current NAS don't need that, but OS 4 and OS 5 systems do.
But there is no option to preserve data, so don't use the factory reset boot menu choice unless you are prepared to lose it.
