ReadyNAS NV Will Not Boot With Four Disks

My ReadyNAS NV with 4.1.10 will not boot with all four disks installed:

(1) Power loss caused reboot.
ReadyNAS would not boot.
Pulled disk 4, then system booted.
Added new disk 4, everything OK (after sync).

(2) Shutdown with FrontView.
ReadyNAS would not boot.
Pulled disk 2, then system booted.
Replaced disk 2, everything OK (after sync).

(3) Shutdown with FrontView.
ReadyNAS would not boot.
Pulled disk 4, then system booted.
Replaced disk 4, sync in progress.

Though I didn't do more testing to confirm that it didn't matter which disk I pulled, it appears that I cannot cold boot with all four disks installed. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

    The PSU is probably failing.

Do you have any issues with other equipment after your recent power loss?
  • No, I haven't had any other issues after that power outage. If it is the PSU, it may have been going out for a long time. I don't reboot the system very often, and it is possible that the disk replacement I made last year was actually unnecessary (due to the same issue).

Is there a way to confirm that this is the PSU (short of buying a new one and trying it out)? (Depending on the price, it might not be a bad idea anyway.)

If I do need to replace the PSU, where can I find information on a suitable replacement. A brief google search (and research I did a couple of years ago) indicates that this is a non-trivial endeavor.
  • I have not noticed a burnt smell. (It is possible that the damage was done and the smell dissipated before I noticed though.)

I could pull it out (perhaps next week), but I am not sure what I am looking for and am leery of putting a drive though another initialization cycle. What would I be looking for on inspection?

My ReadyNAS NV is older than the given serial number range.

    1. Backup data
    2. Power down
    3. Remove PSU
    4. Look for capacitors that are bulging or showing other signs of damage.
  • I have not yet had a chance to power down the system and look for damage. Even if I could diagnose the PSU, how does that change the recommended course of action?
    * If it is bad, as far as I know, there is no available method of purchase of a new PSU. What could be done?
    * If it still looks good, what other issues should I be looking at? What is the probably that I could diagnose a bad PSU?
  • In taking down my NAS to diagnose connection speed issues (now narrowed down to the NAS), I finally had the time to look at the power supply issue.

swish: Thanks for the photos. Though I did not have near the damage that you did, I did have one capacitor which is slightly bulging.

mdgm: Thank you for your calm, collected methodology. I was able to reach Netgear support 1-888-638-4327, then 4 3 3 1 2, and am having a new power supply sent to me for $27.
