ReadyNAS Ultra 2 - No LAN, HDD or Activity lights
Good afternoon,
I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 with 2x 2tb HDD in X-RAID which I use to store Ghost images, so it doesn't see much action.
Today I have come to use it to deploy an image on a users computer, but unable to access it via its IP, which I thought was strange. Taking a look at the device in my server room I see there are no lights on the front other than the power light, the Act light is off and the HDD lights are off. Taking a look at the network port (LAN1) the LED's are on. Tried to ping the device and I get no response, thinking maybe it has hung I decided to power it down, pressing the power button twice to perform the clean shutdown did nothing, so had to hold the power button in order to power it off. I switched the device back on and now I get no lights on LAN1 (nor do I get any activity on LAN2) as well as no lights on the front except the power light. I have taken it off the network and plugged in a laptop locally but still no network activity.
Tried two other HDD's just to see if the existing HDD's are the problem, again I get the same symptoms.
I am starting to think maybe the enclosure is at fault and needs replacing (unfortunately this is now out of warranty)
My question is (unless nothing else can be done to save the enclosure) if I place these two HDD's into the same model or later, will I be able to retain my stored data? Or will it create a new RAID partition and wipe my existing data? This data is pretty crucial and I don't really want to pay to have it restored.
Many thanks,
Mark

- vandermerweMasterYou can put the disks in another ultra 2, ultra 4 or ultra 6 or the plus versions or the pro 2,4 or 6.
The procedure is
Upgrade the firmware on the new nas to latest by setting up the new unit with a new disk and installing 4.2.27.
Power down both devices.
Remove the disks from both units.
Insert the disks from the broken nas in the same order into the new nas.
Power on the new nas.
Have you tried removing the disks from this nas, inserting a spare disk and doing a factory default?
Make sure you remove and label the old disks and if you do put them back in, do so with power off. - markhales85AspirantThanks for the information vandermerwe, much appreciated.
That is actually the only thing I have not tried, the factory reset on the spare disks, but I shall give that a go tomorrow and get back to you.
Mark - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf there is a problem with your Ultra 2, but the disks are fine we have a procedure you can follow to get the data using e.g. a 312. No need to obtain one of the legacy models.
- markhales85AspirantThanks mdgm, do you have a link to the procedure you have just mentioned?
- vandermerweMasterYou need to buy a new nas 312/314/316/516, then contact Netgear support and they will take you through it.
You will need somewhere to backup the data on the disks once the procedure starts.
Don't try anything yourself.
Did you try the unit with a spare disk and factory default. If this works it will rule out a chassis problem. - markhales85AspirantAttempting this now, following the instructions in the guide.
I have had to switch laptops so assuming I will need to install RAIDar on here? (sorry, the description under my name is quite accurate, the ReadyNAS having been in place and set up before I started with this company!) - vandermerweMasterMake sure you remove the existing disks with the power off and label them according to slot number.
when you come to reinsert them, do so with the power off. - markhales85AspirantTried the factory reset boot option and still no network connectivity lights on the LAN port unfortunately. I think the device has well and truly expired.
- vandermerweMasterOK.
So buy a new readynas (I'd suggest a 314 if you can afford it) then contact support who will help you migrate the disks over. It may help if you submit a support request for the unit you have (even though it's out of warranty) , explaining that you are going to buy a new unit and you wish to migrate your disks. - markhales85AspirantThanks for all your help here, think I will go for the 314 so I will have room for expansion.
I'll come back in the future and update this thread as to its progress, fingers crossed the disks didn't go as well!
