ReadyNAS Ultra 4 + slow to resync last HD

Hi everyone, I'm having serious issues with my brand new ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus. It's about the 4th or 5th time I'm trying to make it work properly without success. I've tried numerous setup, nothing works, the last HD seems to take ages to 'resync C:', it says on RAIDar it will take 300+ hours.

I started with 4 disks using X-RAID2 mode (I always choosed that option with my numerous tests by the way).

Here are my disks;

1 = WDC WD15EARS-00MVWB0 [1397 Gb]
2 = WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 [1397 Gb]
3 = WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 [1863 Gb]
4 = WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 [1863 Gb]

So, when it starts, it first checks the disk, takes about 5 to 10 minutes and then goes ahead. It then installs X-RAID2 mode, everything's fine too, 10 to 15 minutes. After that, it does this 'Creating C:', takes about 30 to 45 minutes, then it finishes, okay, fine with me. Then..., it is where it goes 'bad', is says on the small screen on the unit 'Resync C:'..., and this takes ages! I mean I left it over the a whole 3 days and a half, and it was at 47%, and all hard drives are empty, nothing there!. It goes up by 0.1% at every 10 to 15 minutes, that's bad.

If I go to the web admin interface under 'Volumes', I see all 4 disks, the first 3 disks are solid green, I can see '1,397Gb allocated' on the right (and 1,863Gb allocated for the 3rd one), but the 4th disk has no Gb allocated and the green 'button' on the left of the HD is constantly flashing because, when I pass my mouser over it, it says 'Resync C: X%', where X is getting up by 0.1% per 10 to 15 minutes! It's always the final disk that take ages to complete. I've never been at the end since it would take more than a week.

I've tried many configurations, I've tried with 3 disks (1.5Tb + 1.5Tb + 1.5Tb <-- I had a 3rd 1.5Tb HD remainning), I tried with HD slot #1 free, only using #2, #3 and #4 on the NAS, does the same thing, the 3rd drive takes ages to <Resync C:>. And I know the drives are healthy, they all works really fine, I tested them individually and the NAS tests them when starting the process, and gives no error.

Why does the <Resync> process takes that long, is that normal?? More than a week to resync for HD that are empty, that's insane, am I doing something wrong??

You can see a 'Resync' pic here : http://www.ftpservice.ca/2013-01-21%2016.44.20.jpg (Copy - paste the URL into your browser).

Thanks all for taking time to read and reply if you do so.

  • Right now, I started a new 'test' with only 2 x 1.5Tb hard drives, and it does the exact same thing. It seems shorter since, I assume, there's only 2 disks, it reached 1.3% in 10 - 15 minutes, but on the web admin interface, it says 67 hr remaining at a speed of 5,900Kb per sec. Sometimes it writes shorter time, but sometimes it goes up (it was 87 hr minutes ago)..., it just changed to 17 hr at 21.8 Mb /sec...., that's really ..., slow..., no?
  • I'm making a new test with these 2 disks : Seagate Constellation ES 500GB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/S 3.5in Internal Hard Drive (http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=60924&vpn=ST500NM0011&manufacture=Seagate)

    I know they are not on the list of compatible hardware either, but hey, those are entreprise level drives, they are 'best' than WD Green drives, no?

    Well, they are 500Gb drives. The proccess seems faster, BUT, they are 500Gb drives, not 1.5Tb or 2Tb, only 500Gb. In about 10 minutes, it reached to 9.3%, so that is awsome, but again..., 500Gb! But if I want to compare, I would have to compare the HD bandwith from the admin web console, so I log in and click 'Volumes', I see that HD #1 is green solid and that HD #2 is blinking, so as usual. Then I see the speed of the HD (!), while the WD Green had very very unusual speeds (was getting speeds in Kb /sec, then got up to merely 20Mb / sec, never got passed 30Mb / sec), those drives (the 500Gb, enterprise level ones), are rock solid at about 110 Mb /sec, with no let down, it's keeps that speed all the way in.

    By the time I wrote this paragraph, it was at 16.1%, and the admin interface says about 1 hour remaining. So my assumptions are that ... you must avoid Green drives with this at all costs, or at least, use drive on their compatibility list. The ones I'm testing are not, but you can bet I'll buy 4 x drives on their list, all identical, to get the speed it can give me. 18.7% now, speed solid at 110 Mb/sec.

    So my conclusion, avoid Green drives with the ReadyNAS Ultra 4 plus, use fast drives or enterprise level hard drives (WD Black or WD Red). This test was with Seagate Constellation ES, they are quite fast, but Seagate is not my prefered company, I prefer WD better.

    If someone wants to participate on this thread, go ahead, but for me, this is the results I wanted and I shared it.

    22.9% now..., very fast compared to green drives...
  • Exactly 10 minutes later after my last post (9:51), the Resync Process got from 22.9% to 37.8% and never got behind 105 Mb/sec in terms of speed. Should be finished in 45 minutes. Like I said, I know those are only 500Gb drives, but if we calcultate this based on a 2Tb drive, from the same brand..., it would take 4 hours to resync if we consider that a 500Gb drive takes 1 hour, that's good for me compared to..., sometime more than 300 hours for the Green drives!

    I will post a final post on this thread when it finishes, just to let all know what it writes.
  • Ok, it just finished, the LCD screen on the NAS went black (I assume this is to say that nothing happens currently, everything is fine).

    I had a message on screen saying it finished, so I go on Frontview (admin web interface for the NAS), and go on volumes and I see 'X-RAID2 configuration, 2 disks', State = Redundant.

    So I assume all is done and in working state!! It took about 1 hour, maybe 1hr20 minutes to get 2 x 500Gb enterprises-level hard drive fully redundant on the NAS, this is great. So Green drives are definitely an issue, I'm buying 2 x 3Tb WD Red drives right now, those drives are on the compatibility list, so it should be ready in full redundant mode in 6 hours (1 hour x 6, because the drive is 6 times bigger than the Seagate I just tested, maybe 8 hours since I think WD Red are slower drives compared to the Seagate I just tested.
  • Sorry for bringing that one up, just another update for people looking for details.

    I bought 2 x WD 3Tb RED HD, they are on their Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), put them in, and started all over again. Started about an hour ago, it already reached 22.5% so far (fast enough for me), it says that it will finishes in 5 hrs, so about exactly what I calculated.

    The speed is rock solid between 120 Mb/sec and 130 Mb/sec, so that's great.

    So after that I'll get 3Tb of redundant data..., and when I'll need space (I'm actually at 2,2Tb of Data), I'll just put in another drive and BAM, I'll get 6Tb of space, and I could do that once more to finally arrive at 9Tb of space in X-RAID2 with one drive of redundancy, that's more than enough for me.
