ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2] not rebuilding after inserting new disk in bay 1
Hello everybody, After many years of joy using my NAS, 1 of my disks died (the one in bay 1). I immediately ordered new disks and hotswapped the faulty disk. But itś not rebuilding the raid! I see ...

Just to let you all know.
I backed up all my information and installed OS6. I even used my old "defective" drive for this, which seems fine now.
NAS is now resynching, while I'm restoring some information on it already. System seems responsive enough.
Hope everything stays fine.
Have fun!

StephenB,
Thank you for looking into this! I bought Seagate Barracuda drives (2) and both have the same problem. I could believe 1 has a problem, but two ? It could be possible, but I would like to think not.
Could I skip this test ? And why does it say on the displa the disk has passed itś tests (again both!)

Frankly, the built-in drive test is not the best. The tools StephenB suggested do a much better job.

I looked into it, But Iḿ working on an Ubuntu system.... The site only gives Windows tools.
Do you have any hints ?

Seatools for DOS can be created as a bootable USB stick.

FWIW, Seagate Barracuda ("DM") drives have a rather poor track record with RAID. As far as two bad drives - that can happen, especially if they were shipped together.
I guess you could try formatting the drives in a ubuntu system and then run tests with smartctl ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/S.M.A.R.T.#Run_a_test ). I don't think you can run destructive tests that way (write zeros), and sometimes drives do pass the read tests, but not write zeros.
