Just answard the question to my self :) I had to switch the update channel under System->Settings->Update->Check for Updates (see attachment). Anyhow I would expect that if I install an LTS firmware, as 6.9.6 is, this setting should be changed automatically.

Of course when 6.9.6 was first released, it wasn't LTS - it was just a normal new (stable) release.
Personally I don't think this setting should be changed automatically - it is something that should be intentionally set.
