Rebuild problems
I had drive 4 fail. Replaced drive 4 with a new cold spare. The spare almost immediately started giving SMART errors: Detected increasing reallocated sector count[3552] on disk 4 [ST1000DM003-1CH162,...
Just to add to what StephenB said: Unfortunately, out-of-the-box drive failures do occur, and it looks like you have one. If the errors were ATA errors, it might be the NAS. But bad sectors are the drive.
It is not unusual for errors to show up on anther drive in re-sync. That's why making a backup before replacging the drive is recommended. The sync process is very drive intensive. But, more importantly, it aaccesses every sector and the drive can notice something it wasn't seeing because certain areas of the drive never change. If you are still runin g OS 4.2.x, then I don't know a good way around that. If you've upgraded to OS6, then scrubs are the best way to detect such problems before they become critical.
If you had a redundant system with 30 re-allocated sectors on one drive, it wouldn't be too bad. But with one drive failed, you could be on the prescipice of total volume loss.
Thanks for the feedback. My biggest challenge was I was not getting email errors and did not know about the gmail issue!
I am running 4.2.31. Don't know if this unit will run OS6? It is an Ultra 6 or Ultra 6 Plus.
I am in the process of backuping up what I can, and will replace all the drives once I finish.
Yes, your unit can be configured to run OS6. You do lose all Netgear support if you do that (but not Forum support, of course). You also lose all data, so it has to be backed up and restored. I don't have a handy link to the latest instructions for doing it, though.
Gotcha, so OS6 is not a NetGear OS, more like DD-WRT?
