Recycle bin fills up my ReadyNAS
I use Radiator 1.4.6 with my ReadyNAS Duo. About two months ago I enabled the Recycle bin for my CIFS share "Backup", with options "Remove files older than: 10 days" and "Limit Recycle Bin to: 200 Mb" about 2 months ago. Yesterday I noticed that of my 1 Tb discs 600 Gb were used, and found that most of this was the Recycle bin, with loads of copies of backup files through NTI Shadow for ReadyNAS. It is configured to make a backup once a day with 3 older copies saved, so the fourth copy sends the former one to Recycle bin I suppose. Now I've spent several hours erasing this huge bin (that is from now on disabled).
Does anyone recognize this problem - that the Recycle bin doesn't empty itself as it should according to the options? I have turned it off now, and realize that three version copies in the backup usually are enough.

- medimusAspirantI deleted the whole folder (first all files, then I waited 24 hours, then I deleted the folder itself (I had turned off the recycle bin function before)). I can't see any risk doing this, at least if you want to disable the bin. But your message seems to be another proof that something is wrong in the cleanup script.
- rschoonhAspirantThank you. I think I'll give it a try. BTW, I meant to say Recycle Bin rather than Recycler, which is Windows trash bin. I have both in numerous places, so it gets a bit confusing. :?
- philb1AspirantHi,
Is there an answer to the problem reported by medimus above? I have exactly the same problem with the disk filling up because the recycle bin files are never deleted. I have tried all the suggestions in the post but nothing works.
Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks in advance
Phil - ewokNETGEAR ExpertDo you turn the NAS off every night?
- philb1AspirantHi,
I currently time the the NAS to turn off overnight, however I have tried leaving it on but the result is the same.
Phil - ewokNETGEAR ExpertWhat are your Recycle Bin settings and how much space is it currently taking up?
- els76ukAspiranthey - i found the same issue with my readynas. i only spotted it because i got an automated email saying my backup drive was full, which seemed unusual. i checked, and there's 4.5GB in the recycle bin, even though it's set to only keep files for 10 days, and limit to 200 MB.
My ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID] with Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043] is set to auto power off each night and on weekday mornings, so it gets power cycled frequently.
is there any fix for this issue? - ewokNETGEAR ExpertCan you try leaving it on for a couple of days and see if the Recycle Bin gets cleared?
- jerockAspirantI have experienced this same problem with my RadyNas NV+. I have the recycle bin set to 4000mb & 10 days & received the message my NAS was 87% full. I had 800 gb in the recycle bin. of deleted backup files. I did a firmware upgrade after this message so not sure if that will help. I just deleted all files in the recycle bin.
- NASNoob11AspirantDear Jedi and Other posters,
Can I manually deleted items in the share recycle bins w/o creating trouble with my live data?
Have read this thread several times now. Yes, I have this problem also on my Duo (specs in sig below). I have 2 shares (Data and LAN Backups). Both use CIFS only and both display a "Recycle Bin." I do like that the ReadyNas appears to properly put deleted files in the Recycle Bins. But, the ReadyNas does NOT seem to ever clean-up its' share's recycle bins! My current recycle bin settings are 3 days and 20000MB.
Things I've done:
Rebooted the ReadyNas
Rebooted the ReadyNas w/Volume check
Rebooted the ReadyNas w/Quota check
Rebooted the ReadyNas w/ Volume check and Quota check
My ReadyNas runs 24/7, but my drives go to sleep after 2hrs of inactivity (mostly during horizontal time). During vertical time, my Duo gets viewed/opened frequently between 0700-2300hrs.
Still both share recycle bins continue to grow in size as I clean (delete) old files. The OLD stuff just never seems to just go away!
