replacing failed hard drive

I have 2 readynas pro, each with 6 wd red 3 tb drives. Last night I backed up my first readynas to the second one. I only use the second readynas to back up the first one and it is rarely used, like probably less than 10 times since I got it. This morning I checked to see how the backup went and I see the second readynas says "Vol C degraded" with an X over the number 2 position. So I put a new wd red 3 tb drive in the number 2 slot without powering down the readynas, but nothing appears to be happening. The message on the front of the readynas still says "Vol C degraded" and there is still an X over the number 2 position. About every 2 minutes the led info on the front of the readynas goes dim for a second, but not sure it wasn't doing that before. I replaced the drive about 15 minutes ago. Should I power down the readynas then restart it or is there anything else I should try? I know very little about computers in general, I just got the 2 readynas units to backup important files. Thanks.
